I would like the FDA to require all products containing Artificial Sweeteners to print a bold and noticeable warning label specifying the type of sweetener.

The Issue

Many people have physical reactions to artificial sweeteners including but not limited to: headaches, migraines, chest pains, irregularities in heart rate, changes in intestinal balance, gastrointestinal upset and abdominal pain. I have personally reported my side effects to the FDA and encouraged many others to do the same, but I have not yet received a response regarding a plan of action. Many companies are adding artificial sweeteners to products that are not labeled as "diet" or "low sugar" to increase sweetness without changing caloric content. This is making it more difficult to avoid them. Restaurants are not required to divulge their ingredient lists, they are only required to provide allergen information. Artificial sweeteners are not listed as allergens and so many companies will not reveal which products contain them, making it even more difficult to avoid them. Some products that contain hidden or new types of artificial sweeteners are gum, antacids, supplements, children's medicines, infant medicines, baked goods, dairy products, condiments, and high fiber products. A clear warning label informing the consumer that a product contains artificial sweetener(s) and specifying which types of sweetener would help protect the health of the public.
