The Erosion of Common and Civic Sense in India: A Petition for Government Intervention

The Erosion of Common and Civic Sense in India: A Petition for Government Intervention

The Issue

Each day, I and countless like me face the eroding sense of common and civic duty. The fabulous chaos that is the vibrant cultural landscape of India often becomes a source of woe, as the disregard for the principle 'live and let live' manifests in a myriad of ways – interruptions in traffic being the most palpable. The roads, bustling with trucks, buses, cars, and two-or-three wheelers, become the wild west, the law of the jungle in effect, where might equals right.

The issue isn't limited to roads. The me-first attitude is pervasive, from public property management to personal interactions. This can be harmful to social harmony, hinder progressive conversations, and can even stifle economic growth. A World Bank research suggests that deficiencies in soft infrastructure (which includes civil society) can lead to a loss in potential economic activity, up to 2% of GDP in some cases.

My story and frustration echo across many cities, towns, and villages in India. But it's not just about the frustration; it's about the potential for change, progression, and inclusivity that we can achieve by upholding civic sense.

We urge the government to intervene. Launch campaigns to reintroduce our society, especially the older generation, to the morals and principles of civic sense; incorporate modules stressing the importance of civic sense in school curricula; make civic sense an integral part of government and community activities.

The ethos of a nation lies in the hands of its citizens. Let's help India forge a foundation built on respect, compassion, and civic sense in every aspect of life. Sign this petition, and together, let's action change.
