DO NOT change the name of Dubuque Iowa's airport

The Issue

I am proud to be from Dubuque just as many of us are. The airport named for the city is just fine. A young lady that I presume is also from Dubuque, has suggested the airport be renamed after a world war II army pilot. The pilot, RL Martin, was black. In her own words, that is basically why she thinks we should name our airport after him. RL Martin served his country during World War II, just as did a great many other people, both black and white. He survived and came home to lead a long life, he passed in Illinois at the age of 99 years. Those of us that say we honor and respect our military should think about the roughly four hundred thousand, nearly a half a million, US soldiers that did not return from that war. In my mind, everyone of those dead soldiers is as much of a hero as Robert Martin was. Mr. Martin got a post office in Illinois named after him, there are only so many post offices and airports in the country. I think Miss Gordon should not be greedy on his behalf. If we are going to name the airport in honor of a US soldier, lets pick any ten, one hundred,or any one thousand of the soldiers that did not make it home, and name the airport after them. Miss Gordon says she was attracted to Martin's story because he was black. Many people say they want this black and white differentiation to go away, I assure you, so do I, but it will never go away if we do not let it go away. This black pilot was no more of a hero than the hundreds of thousands of soldiers that did not make it home, no matter what their skin color. Just being black is not enough of a reason to value his service above those that did not make it home, I cannot repeat or emphasize that enough. Dubuque Regional Airport is a small airport named for a rather small proud town, lets just leave it that way rather than jump on some racist bandwagon.
