The use of multi racial plasters within healthcare settings in the UK

The Issue

The use of white skin coloured plasters highlights the problem of white privilege within the UK. Here, the availability of multi-racial plasters is very limited. As a student paediatric nurse, how am I meant to play my part in teaching equality amongst children, if the only plasters that are available to me are those of a white skin colour? Plasters were made skin colour for a reason, so wounds could be concealed and kept clean. If a child with black skin is made to wear a white plaster this will surely make them feel as though we don't value them as much as white patients? I believe that in 2020 this should not be an issue that I should be addressing! The UKs largest supermarket, Tesco, seem to be the only retailer that stock plasters that match different skin colours. However I have not seen them being used in healthcare, and neither have my colleagues. This needs to change. There is no excuse for this is be an issue within the NHS or any other healthcare provider!
