"Don't Huff, Don't Puff, Stay away and Quit from that Stuff"

The Issue

Smoking has been an ongoing problem since it was invented. It poses a threat to both our health and our environment. A lot of people believe that it’s good because of the nicotine that provides immediate stress relief for them, but it’s actually the opposite. Smoking can cause health problems specifically to our Respiratory system, terminal illness to the smoker and the ones who inhale it. Also, it’s a big contributor to air pollution on our planet. Especially in our country, The use of tobacco products are on a rise.
- Tobacco products are used by 23.8 percent of Filipino adults (aged 15 and over), including 41.9 percent of men and 5.8 percent of women. Smoke is present in 22.7 percent of the population (40.3 percent of men and 5.1 percent of women). Smokeless tobacco is used by 1.7 percent of the population (2.7 percent of men and 0.7 percent of women). Tobacco products are used by 16% of teenagers (ages 13-15). (boys 22.2 percent; girls 10.4 percent ). 13% of people smoke cigarettes, 3.4 percent use other tobacco products, and 2.5 percent use smokeless tobacco.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke
- Secondhand smoke is exposed to 21.5 percent of adults (age 15+) who work indoors, 21.9 percent of adults in restaurants, and 37.6 percent of adults on public transportation. In the Philippines, 54.2 percent of adolescents (ages 13–15) are exposed to secondhand smoke in enclosed public areas, while 38.3 percent are exposed at home.

Consequences for Health
- Tobacco-related diseases claim the lives of over 110,000 Filipinos each year. Tobacco smoke is responsible for 21.8 percent of male deaths and 9.7% of female deaths (18.6 percent overall). Tobacco is responsible for more than 23% of male deaths and 12% of female deaths (16.6 percent overall).

Environmental Impact
- Cigarette butts are the most common type of plastic waste in the world, with an estimated 4.5 trillion butts contaminating the environment.

With the assistance of this petition, we desired to call out our government here in the Philippines to pay attention and do haste actions to this problem so that it can be addressed immediately. We humbly suggest that they would provide such Seminars and Talks about the awareness of using Cigarettes, especially to the youth. Moreover, this is not only for the betterment of our health and surroundings, but also it is for the good of our country to be considered as a smoke-free environment. So deal with these realities, open your thoughts, train yourself to be the person you want to be. We wished that this would be the way that can motivate you not to do such things that means risking anyone's lives. And bare in mind that we only live once, so don't let Smoking be the reason to let it waste yourself and the environment.
