The Declaration for the Protection of Charities’ Fundraising Rights

The issue

Australia’s charity sector is one of the most trusted in the world. Built on ethics, transparency, and love — not shortcuts.

But that trust is under threat.

New digital platforms like www.charitabl.org have created donation pages and are currently soliciting donations for 39,000 Australian charities without their consent, knowledge, agreement or verified banking details.

This mirrors issues seen overseas with the PayPal Giving Fund and more recently with GoFundMe soliciting donations without approval.

No transparency. No control. No approval.

This non-consensual fundraising undermines every principle our sector stands for.

If left unchecked, Australia’s 3,000+ Public Ancillary Funds and others could do the same by raising money “on behalf of” charities without permission or accountability.

We Believe

✅ Charities must OPT IN, not be forced to opt out.
✅ Consent, transparency, and governance are non-negotiable.
✅ Professional fundraisers deserve respect and protection.
✅ Charity names, brands, and trademarks must be honoured, not hijacked.
✅ Trust is the foundation of every act of giving.

We Call For

1. A ban on non-consensual fundraising.
2. A Right to Consent for all charities and nonprofits.
3. A new sector-wide code of ethics co-created by fundraisers, regulators, and platforms.

We Stand Together

We are fundraisers, charity leaders, donors, and advocates who believe that ethics are not optional. We believe in innovation with integrity — in consent, respect, and transparency.

Ethics matter. Consent matters. Transparency matters.
Governance (the G in ESG) matters.

Please sign and share this declaration to defend trust in giving and protect the rights of every charity.
