The Flash to hire a black female writer

The Flash to hire a black female writer

The Issue

The Flash is in its sixth season and the female lead of the show is a black woman (Candice Patton). The show continuously promotes harmful tropes like the “strong black woman” and also alienating black woman lives and opinions through the character of Iris. Despite a black leading lady and black cast members they have never had a black female writer or made public an intention of wanting one. Coming into 2020 this is no longer acceptable. We ask for a writer who looks like the female lead to be hired and tasked with making sure she gets treated as she should. Anti black women undertones perpetuate the show and we must demand better. We are calling for Mark Pedowitz and Greg Berlanti to step in and hire a black female writer for the flash. Simply having a black man showrunner is not enough. Black womens voices are distinct and different; they deserve to be heard.
