Ensure Christ's Hospital remains true to its mission of educating the poor and needy.

Ensure Christ's Hospital remains true to its mission of educating the poor and needy.
The Issue
Christ's Hospital School was set up in 1552 with the express purpose of educating the poor and needy. Over the centuries, it has provided a huge number of children from all backgrounds with a first class education - an education that would otherwise not have been accessible to the vast majority of its pupils.
Extending these opportunities to those unable to pay for them has been possible because the School itself has remained separate from the Christ's Hospital Foundation. While the School is charged with educating its pupils, it is the Foundation's responsibility to manage the financial reserves that make this possible, and, crucially, to ensure that the School remains true to its charitable mission of educating the poor and needy.
There is currently a proposal before the Council of Almoners to merge the roles of the School and the Foundation, making the Head of School the Chief Executive of the combined organisation.
We believe that this proposal would remove the separation of powers that has ensured that the Christ's Hospital Foundation has remained true to its mission for the past 464 years. We also believe that while a offering a small number of full fee places is financially prudent, the current level (26%) undermines the School's charitable mission and would like to see this level return to 10% each year, starting with the 2020 intake.
