Paul Thomas Anderson has been accused of imitating the Coen Brothers because of the similarities of the novel Inherent Vice to the film The Big Lebowski but Pynchon writing Inherent Vice was like Neil Young making Harvest Moon: he was making an updated version of the one book he wrote that is easily digested by regular people. By doing an original film adaptation of Lot 49 they'd be clearing PTA's name while simultaneously potentially making one of the greatest and most beloved film adaptations of a Great Novel of all time.
