To recognize by statue memorial Robert "Pikin" Quiroga for giving The City San Antonio global recognition in the Sport of Boxing
The Issue
It is vital we memorialize sports heroes in City of San Antonio due to the impact and influence sport's hero have on the community. This impact goes beyond the sports arena it reaches all starting with the young children who aspire to become like their hero. Citizens who have reached sport's legend status like Robert "Pikin" Quiroga must be recognized for their great achievements. Recognition to a local sport's hero allows our youth the opportunity to know they can accomplish anything if they have determination, passion and drive towards their dreams. This visual reminder allows one to dream big and recognize their potential. If someone like them went to the same schools, walked the same streets, and ran this very path can make their dream a reality their dreams are also within their reach. We as a community cannot let our history die with the person. For this reason we are proposing the City of San Antonio memorialize Robert "Pikin" Quiroga by placing a live size statue at Woodlawn Lake. Woodlawn Lake holds many memories for the west side community for it is here where Robert trained to prepare for his legendary boxing career.
April 24, 1990 with an impressive 14-0 record, Robert traveled to Sunderland, England to challenge Juan Polo Perez for the International Boxing Federation Super Flyweight title. The fans at the Crowtree Leisure Centre found out what the fans at Sunken Gardens and Freeman Coliseum already were aware of, they were watching a determined fighter on his way to making his dream a reality. Robert scored a unanimous decision to claim the title, thus becoming the first American boxer and first San Antonian to win a coveted Super Flyweight world championship. Robert received a hero's welcome upon his arrival in San Antonio.
His boxing career included the following:
•1st American to win the I.B.F Super flyweight Championship
•Ring Magazines 1991 Fight of the Year
•Ring Magazines TOP 10 Fights of 1990
•Ring Magazines 100 Greatest Title Fights of All Time
•Member of the San Antonio National Hispanic Sports Hall of Fame
•Member of the San Antonio Boxing Hall of Fame
•Member of the Laredo Sports Hall of Fame
•Member of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame
