Save the Locust Tap

Save the Locust Tap
The Issue
The Locust Tap is not only a local watering hole loved by many but also a staple of the East Village and a representation of history in Des Moines, Iowa. Making history visible is the core of much of the work owner and architect Kirk Blunck has engaged in the last 15 years. It does not require architectural training to recognize and appreciate the characteristics of older properties, nor the ability to envision a balance of old and new among East Locust. While sitting and enjoying the company of others and drinking an adult beverage patrons have had the opportunity to a feel the passage of time. Many have congregated within the graffiti covered walls for years establishing lifelong friendships and means of support regardless their background. When the Locust Tap was forced to close their doors a void was created among society that cannot be filled with new construction or commercialized business, the East Village has thrived and only been made better by the presence of the cornerstone bar. I ask that we learn to embrace imperfections, as we do in all things and people we truly love and SAVE THE LOCUST TAP!
