Situated in the Helderberg area of the western cape, Hottentots Holland mountains, has been a place where many individuals, both human and animal, have travelled through along the infamous whale coast route.

Over the years there has been an issue with the term “Hottentot”. A term once used to label the Khoikhoi, the indigenous people of South Africa. This term is now seen as deprecative and considered offensive by many people, not only within the Helderberg but across the nation.

I would like to recognise all the Khoikhoi people have done for the history of our great country. I call you to reconsider the name of this mountain range as the rest of our country undergoes great change and development.

We have changed many names that once reminded us of the violent history of our beautiful country. We can once again change this crude name to one that will remind us of the great future our country holds.

I suggest ‘Mandelaberg’ in honour of the great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. A man who dreamt of peace, love, unity and kindness, may we follow in his footsteps.
