The Citarum River (West Java, Indonesia) - Health Crisis

The Issue

We are students from UASLE in Brooklyn, in our Bioethics class we researched about The Citarum River pollution, Over 5 million people live around this river of which is the main resource for their necessities. The river is located in West Java, Indonesia where there are also factories that surround the banks of the river. In the research, we found that the river contains many heavy metals that trace back to the factories that make clothes for the USA like H&M and GAP. The heavy metals in this river have led to the people in these villages getting health issues that are being left untreated. Our group is working to bring awareness to this health crisis by showing that people do care about this issue.
