Add Footnotes to Racist Book of Mormon Passages

Add Footnotes to Racist Book of Mormon Passages
The Issue
Taken as a whole the Book of Mormon is an anti-racist text. It shows that God invites every single one of his children unto Him regardless of race, creed, gender, or nationality. It shows that outward traits (in this text often, but not limited to, relative "whiteness") are abysmal indicators of goodness and worth. However, there are passages in the Book of Mormon that are racist and thus deeply problematic.
A coherent way to deal with racist ideas and commentary located within an overall anti-racist text is to view the specific prophets and historians that intermittently expounded racist views within the text as imperfect products of their time. We all deal with prejudices and biases and it is often easy to let them color our perspective. We don't condemn these authors by their least redemptive quotations, but neither should we ignore excerpts that have caused hurt, pain, and confusion and can continue to do so.
Accordingly, we ask that the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints take steps to provide footnotes explaining passages that contain racist ideas as such, and context that shows that such passages are the effect of imperfect individuals who struggled with prejudice and racism. As passages where such commentary would be necessary we suggest 1 Nephi 12:23, 1 Nephi 13:14-15, 2 Nephi 5:21-23, and 3 Nephi 2:14-16.
This is not a definitive list of such passages, and we ask that a Church committee of diverse racial representation be formed to recommend the specific passages where such context and explanation would be helpful, and especially what form these footnotes would take.
