End gender stereotyping in children's clothing

End gender stereotyping in children's clothing

Here's an issue that bothers me A LOT and I would like to talk to you about it.
I ask that you consider removing your girls and boys sections in favour of one kids-wear department. Some boys love sequins and pink but why should they have to shop in the girls section to find them? Some girls would love a Minecraft t-shirt so why are you selling these as for boys only? The animal designs in the boys section feature sharks, video game characters and dinosaurs. Yet the animals in the girls section are often unicorns, mermaids and occasionally fish.
As a girl, I buy clothes in the boys section because they fit my style and personality and interests. However that is not the point, it’s more than that. Gender is not defined, it is a fluid spectrum. I believe that by having these sections, you are telling girls what they should like and telling boys what they should like and not providing anything in between those two choices.
It would be far easier to buy clothes based on type, age, character, style, and colour rather than the split of designs into girls and boys based on harmful gender stereotypes that are unhelpful and offensive.
The products we use, the clothing we wear and the advertisements we see can influence how we act and think about ourselves. Gender stereotypes perpetuate the idea that some things are for boys and others are for girls. I believe that it forces children to connect with ideas that are old-fashioned or unrealistic.
Gender stereotyping is harmful. Children should not be split into either girls or boys based on stereotypes but given a choice. Would it be possible to rethink this approach and design for all children?
Thanks!
