Stop politicians from bribing gullible voters to get elected

The Issue

The election season has set in. And with it has begun the era of promises, not of policies, not of vision, not of strategy, not of action plans but of freebies and goodies, of phones and blenders and mixers and free lunches. With a large populace uneducated and living at margins, politicians make wild promises of personal  takeaways to voters to virtually purchase their votes. Jaylalitha wins elections, not because she has sound policy or good administration to offer but because she promises to throw tax payers moneys to give away mixers and blenders and free meals to voters. The queen of lucre now promises a phone to every voter if elected. Akhilesh Yadav wins an election because he promises laptops and bicycles and cash to his voters. Arvind Kejriwal rides high on promises of waiver of electricity and water bills. State after state, politicians across the nation have mastered the art of bribing gullible voters. And this bribe comes from public coffers. The question that comes to every thinking person's mind is, why does the Election Commissioner, the regulator, does not stop this immoral, unethical and wrong practice. Why do we have to get a set of people to govern us not because we consider them best for governance but because they can bribe their way to power with impunity. And surprisingly the bribes come from our own hard earned moneys, paid as taxes. This must change. This nation needs, in fact badly needs, people who can direct its destiny with integrity, vision, competence and capability not people who bribe voters to either wrest or cling to power and then enrich themselves. This nation needs elections to be fought on visions, dreams, strategy, patriotism, policy and direction. Please sign this petition to the Chief Election Commissioner to come out with a change in the Model Code of Conduct declaring every promise of transfer of any direct benefit to any citizen or class of citizens either out of party or candidate's resources or out of resources of the State, as a promise of a bribe to and unethical inducement of voters, that would result in disqualification of the candidate or the party itself.
