Stop poll duty for private teachers

Stop poll duty for private teachers
The Issue
Private-school/college teachers around India are shocked at recent attempts to impose election duty on them.
It is illegal to drag Non-Grantable teachers in the rigmarole of election duty.
Sure, it is the Election Commission's right to impose election duty upon GRANTABLE teachers. They receive their salary from public funds. They can be said to be employees of local authority. Article 324(6) of the Constitution and Section 159 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 make it obligatory for grantable teachers to perform election duty.
Our sympathies are with our fellow grantable teachers who have to go through the ordeal of training sessions, material collection, etc. We wish the process was more dignified and less stressful for architects of the future generations of this country.
But why impose election duty on us non-grantable teachers? We receive no compensation or favour from public funds. We earn an honest wage in a dignified manner. We pay direct and indirect taxes. We are responsible citizens – we caste our vote and serve as role models for our students and the society.
Do we have no dignity? Is it not illegal to impose poll duty on us?
If you agree that us non-grantable teachers should not be subject to the ordeal of election duty – take action now and sign our letter! We will send it to the Chief Election Commissioner of India to let him know we deserve better.
Thank you and please do spread the word - share on Facebook and Whatsapp.
