The Call for Quota Reforms in Bangladesh | Save Student Lives

The Issue

The Quota Reformation Movement in Bangladesh is a significant ongoing student-led protest aimed at reforming the existing quota system in government jobs and public universities. The movement began as a response to the perceived injustice and lack of meritocracy within the recruitment process.

Historically, the quota system in Bangladesh was established to provide opportunities for marginalized communities, including freedom fighters, women, ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities. In the system, 44% of first- and second-class government jobs are based on merit, while the remaining 56% are reserved for specific communities, including children and grandchildren of freedom fighters (30%), women (10%), backward districts (10%), ethnic minorities (5%), and people with physical disabilities (1%). While the intention was to ensure inclusivity, over time, the system has faced criticism for being disproportionate and unfair, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among the student population.

Unfortunately, the government has deployed riot police who fired tear gas and charged with batons on Tuesday (7/16/24) during violent clashes between the protesters and a pro-government student group. Paramilitary troops were also deployed across several districts amid heightened tensions. At least 5 people were reported killed and thousands of students’ protestors were injured. The current situation is only getting worse, the police force has been recklessly violent and attacking against armless student body.

We believe that as members of the global student community, it is crucial to stay informed and support each other in the pursuit of justice and equality. As Bangladeshi Students we wanted to make sure your and our voices are heard globally. Hence we are starting this petition as a form of global protest against this oppression.
