Changing IGCSE Results

The Issue

In contradiction to the promised guidelines of creating a statistical standardisation system that takes into account the school's past performance in addition to the student's data in previous grades and the overall national analytics, the issued IGCSE results have undermined the efforts and dreams of thousands of diligent and hard-working students.

Neither being rigorous nor predictive, the assessment has only single-handedly depended on averaging the results of the last three years and distributed the average accordingly on the ranked numbers, which most schools grappled with in the first place. The ranking system has left innumerable students dispriviliged as teachers were forced into ranking their students with out final examinations. It was hoped and expected that a predictive analytical model, by virtue of resorting to data analysis and machine learning, together with teacher grades, would have been adopted to mitigate injustice and achieve a higher level of grade accuracy.

This is a time of unprecedented disappointments, challenges and losses and, accordingly, unprecedented measures should be taken to redress the grievances to which the young generations, all over the world, have been unfairly experiencing. Small decisions can have great impacts on the wellbeing and future of the young men and women whose dreams and aspirations we tackle today. 

We urge all involved parties to:

1) Revisit the analytical model of grading and refraining from limiting the model to the average mean which ignores the variation of distinguished students in different cohorts 

2) Open student-based individual appeals and complaints to avoid statistical overgeneralisation. 

3) Take student evidence into account in the case of student appeals 

4) The cancellation of registration fees for students interested in resitting for subjects taken in June 2020

5) Minimising university requirements to be in accordance with the challenging situation of Grades 11 and 12
