Stop the proposed changes to Hull Trinity House Academy

The Issue

It was recently revealed that Hull Trinity House Academy intends to move location to the former site of Endeavour High School on Beverly Road. The plans also included further increasing the number of pupils at the school and turning the school from boys-only to co-educational.
This is deeply concerning to many people from the city, especially to the old boys who attended the school. This shift will totally alter the character of the academy and further deviate it from its long heritage and history as a small, inner city, all-boys school.

Hull Trinity House Academy (HTHA) has always enjoyed the privilege of being 'special'. Its students are proud of the traditions and heritage that they become a part of when joining. No other school in Hull can claim to have such deep roots into the Cities vibrant history. No other school in the area takes part in termly church parades and monthly chapel services. No other school in the area salutes a flag every morning on parade. No other school can boast of its links to every port in the world. It would be absolutely devastating to students, past and present, to see that heritage thrown away. Moving away from the city centre, doubling up the size of the school, and making the academy co-educational are all the first steps on the slippery slope HTHA appears to be going down.

Currently, there are only two single-sex schools in Hull. (HTHA and Newland). Making HTHA co-educational would mean that there would be no option for any parents in Hull to send their boys to a single-sex school. Parents should have the right to choose whether or not they want their children to be educated in a single or mixed gender environment.

The initial move in 2013 was difficult for many but necessary due to the dilapidated, dangerous nature of the original site. However, pupils from the school are still based in the centre of Hull and still attend parades, church parades, and chapel services. It is difficult to see how the school intends to maintain these traditions at a new site so far from the city centre. It is also dissapointing to see that a site which was 'built for purpose' only 7 years ago is now being deemed 'not good enough'.

We sincerely hope that the Academy, the Brethren, and Hull City Council will reverse these plans. We also hope that, if these plans are not reversed, the Regional Schools Commissioner (Carol Gray) will make an effort to stop them from proceeding.
