We were intimidated for being solidary: Where is the tolerance? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvlKf884enA On July 11, 2026, in Jamaica Plain, a humble charity sale organized by myself and four other Latina leaders—Berkys Díaz, Mayra Florentino, Rosana Rivera, Luzmar Centeno, and Milagros Marte—was brutally interrupted. This humanitarian initiative aimed to support victims of a recent earthquake, providing necessary relief to those in dire need. Yet, the event was marred by an abuse of power, leaving lasting scars on our community. While conducting this legitimate activity, Boston Public Schools (BPS) officials unjustly demanded unnecessary permits, despite confirmation from the police that no laws were broken. Their false claims resulted in an unnecessary confrontation that startled volunteers and threatened the stability of our peaceful efforts. Even more distressing, the volunteers, including myself, faced intimidation tactics as these officials harassed us in front of a minor, my young daughter, who witnessed her mother's dedication being overshadowed by fear and hostility. Such encounters should never form the basis of her understanding of community service. The situation escalated when a third party leveraged the guise of immigration enforcement, threatening ICE involvement to silence and intimidate us. This fear-mongering in a nation built on diversity and inclusion is unacceptable and has no place in our community's fabric. Shockingly, BPS remained unresponsive to these grave threats, further underscoring their complicity in this disgraceful chain of events. As a Latina leader and a mother, this incident is deeply personal and infuriating. Our rights were trampled upon under the guise of bureaucracy, and our safety unfairly jeopardized. We cannot stand silent when intimidation and discrimination are wielded as tools of oppression in a city like Boston, storied for its long fight for justice and equality. We must hold Boston Public Schools accountable. We demand a thorough investigation into the actions of those involved and a formal apology to our community. Our aim is to ensure that no other humanitarian efforts are disrupted by similar abuses of power and that no child witnesses what my daughter did that day. We need your support to amplify our voices and put an end to such grievances.
