BE MAGICS VOICE! Little Guild Of Saint Francis in West Cornwall, RETURN TO BEING A REAL NO KILL FACILITY, CHANGE YOUR WAYS NOW

The Issue

Here is an update on the info on this petition from a person who was the canine manager at the shelter for four plus years .It makes this whole situation, including the statement by Little Guilds John Guenther below in an email exchange even harder to understand :

Stephanie Thompson
In the adoption agreement it states for any reason you can not keep this animal it must be returned to the little guild. The shelter was notified of the incident and payed for the euthanasia . The shelter should have put him in quarantine, and then had a professional meet with him. Five other animals were sent to a different facility out of state that all had a history. Why not Magic?

A Voice For The Animals

Here, is the drastic change of direction of the mission of The Little Guild in their own words

Sep 6, 2015 — First: The mission statement of The Little Guild For The Welfare Of Animals, West Cornwall, CT.up until recently:

Little Guild of St.Francis
285 Sharon Goshen Turnpike, West Cornwall, CT 06796

Description
Little Guild of St.Francis believes in the intrinsic worth of all living things and recognize in particular, the unusually long and close association humans have had with dogs and cats. For whatever reasons, many innocent animals do not receive the care to which they are entitled. We pledge to protect and rehabilitate distressed animals and promote humane education.

Unclaimed stray and abandoned dogs are referred to the Little Guild by the Animal Control Officers of all the towns in Northwest Connecticut. Stray and abandoned cats come to us from the people of Litchfield County who find and rescue them. At the shelter, the animals are groomed, fed nutritious meals, inoculated and treated by a veterinarian. At the appropriate age the animals are spayed or neutered. While hundreds of pets are adopted each year, our policy of keeping animals until a home is found for them means that the Little Guild cares for some animals for months or even years.

Now, here is the latest statement in a press release from The Little Guild Of Saint Francis For The Welfare Of Animals, West Cornwall, CT.

A direct quote from Liz Sullivan, the Little Guild’s shelter manager:

"We have instituted rigorous intake protocols “to ensure we’re taking in only adoptable pets that we are equipped to help.”

That is a drastic shift in mission statement For The Little Guild to instantly change from a shelter that cares for all homeless and distressed animals, to now care for only adoptable pets. Has the Little Guild has become a "boutique" shelter? What about the homeless, abandoned
and distressed animals? To the Little Guild board and management, we will continue to ask you that question.

In just the past few months, (after a drastic change in management and in the board at the Little Guild) two dogs have been euthanized. One recently.
In an email exchange with The Little Guild board President John Guenther , he was described to me how the second euthanization occurred...

"Actually, Marshall, that is not true. We were transparent about the first situation, which occurred in May. Any allegation that we euthanized a second dog this year at the LG is utter nonsense and defamatory.
There was a dog adopted out by us last year that attacked its owner last week and she directed it be put down -- a heartbreaking situation that people are maliciously misrepresenting to you. That is unconscionable.
As I indicated, we have not changed our mission or policy. No-kill shelters do not euthanize for space but do so for humane reasons when the animal is suffering or posing a danger to pets or humans. This is the industry definition, and one we have adhered to."

Now for the painful part....on the adopters own Facebook page, posts about the dog had never indicated that this had been done before. By their own Facebook posts up until that moment, everything was fine..even with videos showing how happy the dog was. All that indicates that this was not an attack dog.

In that one statement in the email Mr. Guenther indicated that the adopting family, following none of the standards of NO KILL shelter protocols, had the dog euthanized .That is an indication that the dog was not even returned to the Little Guild. That goes completely against the contract that The Little Guild had adopters sign, and the true meaning of a No-Kill shelter. What was not followed was an all IMPORTANT clause about returning the dog to the shelter if you do not want the dog for ANY reason. That clause is in every contract of every responsible NO KILL shelter in the country.

That is what NO Kill means. It doesn't matter what the owner decided, it was not their decision to make, it was a decision that should have been made at The Little Guild Of Saint Francis once the dog was returned and after consultations with experts in the field, a medical evaluation, and a full interview with the person returning the dog to the shelter, and staff and volunteer workers at the shelter who had lovingly cared for and walked the dog before the adoption.

The Little Guild had the opportunity to take the dog back, even call other NO KILL shelters to take the dog. But what happened? Apparently no thought of protecting the dog and follow correct accepted procedures and enforcing the signed contract that the dog be returned to the Little Guild.

The staff and volunteers at the Little Guild are hard working, dedicated people who help save animals lives. To see the board, it's President and Executive Director dishonor their work, and show no apparent compassion or professionalism with this dog, their employees and their volunteers is unacceptable.

We are calling for the Little Guild Of Saint Francis For The Welfare Of Animals Board, it's President, and Executive Director immediately publicly acknowledge the mistakes that were made, apologize to the staff, volunteers and donors, and put the proper procedures in place to once again make the Little Guild Of Saint Francis For The Welfare Of Animals a true, transparent, NO KILL shelter. And then hold a public meeting with board members and staff so questions can be asked, and answers given as to how the Little Guild wandered so far off mission.

This can not be allowed to happen again.

For the dogs, donors, volunteers, the dedicated staff, and the public this is the only way to begin to rebuild trust and confidence in their important mission.

Remember...animals do not have a voice, a NO KILL shelter should provide one for them, not let it be snuffed it away as happened to Magic.
