Blood Tribe Needs to Add One More Day of Elections Polling Due to Covid-19 Circumstances.
The Issue
WHEREAS the 2020 Blood Tribe Elections did not accommodate the requirements set out by the Covid-19 pandemic, Alberta Restrictions, and the delay incurred due to the Restrictions. They are as follows.
Section 15.17 states “Promptly at 7:00 o’clock in the evening of election day, the Chief Electoral Officer shall publicly declare that the polls are closed, however, all eligible voters who are inside the polling station at such time but who have not yet voted shall be allowed to vote.” This was not possible due to Covid-19 Alberta restrictions prohibiting indoor crowds therefore everyone had to wait outdoors. We acknowledge the time was extended to 8pm, but this was still inadequate time. People outdoors and in line should have been acknowledged as indoor voters due to Covid-19 restrictions and Section 7.3 (2 meter distance protocol between individuals). Section 15.17 was not possible.
Section 7.07 states “If the weather is not favorable for individuals waiting in line and outside for the walk-in nomination process or at the polling stations, they will be provided a ticket or number by election officials or administrative support staff in order to allow them to wait in their vehicles until they have been summoned to attend inside the building by election officials or administrative support staff.” Many voters were denied this process as lines were at least a 2 hour wait. So, they either left due to the cold and windy conditions, or scared to contract Covid-19, or waited and only to be chased away by the City of Lethbridge Police without placing their vote. The Police presence made a lot of Blood Tribe members feel disrespected, scared, and even made them feel they had done something wrong, whereas that was not the case
The Chief Electoral Officer should have accommodated the delay of the voting process brought on by Alberta Restriction on November 25, 2020. As we witness, the time provided was not adequate!
ACTION PETETIONED FOR: We the undersigned are concerned citizens of the Blood Tribe and URGE our Chief Electoral Officer, Blood Tribe Elections Appeal Board, Leaders, and Candidates to act now to endorse this petition by adding another day of elections polling to collect those ballots from those affected by the above circumstances. All Blood Tribe members deserve a voice via their ballot, and Thursday’s November 26th process was not adequate.
