The Black River District Council of Mauritius: To reinstate the twice-weekly domestic waste collection

The Issue

This is a petition to the Black River District Council concerning the recent decision made by your Council to reduce the frequency of domestic waste removal collection from twice weekly to once a week. We, the undersigned would be grateful that you reconsider your decision for the following reasons :

Collecting waste once a week will create the following unhygienic conditions:

1. Bins being overloaded will allow waste to rot. This will attract flies, maggots, rats and will be a breeding ground for bacteria which could lead to various diseases.

2. Families having newborns need to dispose of an average of 7-8 nappies per day. After a week, this will accumulate to 56 nappies. Leaving human feces in a bin for a week could bring unnecessary diseases such as e –coli, cholera, Hepatitis A, typhoid and the spreading of gastroenteritis.

3. Un emptied bins will now attract more stray dogs to raid the overfilled bins. This will lead to scattered waste and of course spread further diseases.

4. Air pollution due to bad odor is not healthy or pleasant and will annoy the public.

5. Overflowing bins also displays an ugly scenario for the environment. This can affect the tourism industry.

Your immediate cooperation is required to reinstate the twice-weekly waste collection until  we can find a better solution for waste management and control .

Sincerely,
