Kinship carers gathered at Parliament House Canberra and laid flowers - Purple for kinship carers and Yellow for Kinship kids- to represent those who could not leave their caring responsibilities to attend. This was the very first time in Australian History that Kinship carers could be acknowledged collectively. Although there were less than 4000 flowers (while it is estimated that there may be as many as 250,000 carers) it made a statement.
"We are here and we will not remain silent any longer"
Most cannot be photographed as it may identify the child/ren in their care, they cannot speak out as they are threatened with removal of the child/ren in their care.
Today they spoke, and next year they will speak louder and we will continue to shout until the children are respected and safe.
We made a scratch, now we need to keep pushing, keep being heard.
We are after all the majority of carers caring for Australia's most vulnerable children.
