Save Blessed Sacrament St. Gabriel High School from closing down
The Issue
Blessed Sacrament St. Gabriel High School (BSSG) in New Rochelle, New York has been around more than 70 years and on January 22, 2013, I received a letter from my teacher saying that our beloved school will be shut down by the Archdiocese of New York due to financial difficulties. This is not just any school but it is our home. At BSSG, there are different levels so students learn at their own pace. There is a 98% graduation rate. This school is a place where teachers give their time before and after school to help students succeed in both the classroom and the real world. A lot of the teachers and staff who currently teach at the school were once students here themselves. Our principal, Edward Sullivan, was stricken with an illness and through it all he came to work and had a contagious smile; even through difficult times he showed everyone how to keep a positive attitude. Principal Sullivan is an amazing principal, inspirational role model, and a special friend. Our school donates food to soup kitchens and we have a program where the students help the elderly at the local nursing home; isn’t that what Christianity is about, helping any and all who need it? But now the Archdiocese, wants to close our school permanently and there is not many options for other school choices for us. Blessed Sacrament St. Gabriel High School may just be another school to the Archdiocese of New York but it is a place that we call home.
