The 10 Commandments Do Not Belong in my Classroom

The 10 Commandments Do Not Belong in my Classroom
The Issue
I am a public school Kindergarten teacher in Klein Independent School District.
On May 29, 2026, a donated 10 Commandments poster was delivered to my classroom, and I was instructed to post it on a wall of my choosing. I did comply with this directive, but I am doing so in protest.
I personally and professionally object to the 2025 Texas Law, S.B. 10, mandating the display of the Judeo-Christian Bible’s 10 Commandments in my public school classroom. I object based on the following reasons:
- The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (which supersedes state law) prohibiting congressional laws respecting an establishment of religion.
- The legal precedent of The U.S. Supreme Court case, Stone v. Graham (1980), which established that it is unconstitutional to require the Ten Commandments to be posted in public school classrooms, as this violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
- Unequivocal rejection of the state Attorney General's claims that the Ten Commandments’ ideals are "irrevocably intertwined with America's legal, moral, and historical heritage" (Ken Paxton, 2025)
We, the undersigned, request that the Klein ISD Superintendent and Board of Trustees:
- allow individual teachers to remove the 10 Commandments posters, if they so choose, without professional reprimand or consequences.
- join existing legal action against the 2025 SB10 10 Commandments law in Texas, if you so choose.
Thank you.
