That Point Ellice House be Preserved and Reopened by the Province of British Columbia

The Issue

We the signed call upon the Provincial government to keep the Point Ellice House Museum and Gardens preserved and open to the public.

The Point Ellice House Museum and Gardens has now closed.  This excellently maintained museum in Victoria B.C., a Provincial Historic Site, provided a stunningly preserved time capsule with great information to keep the public informed and educated on BC history.

It was a great spot for school groups to attend and soak in a sense of historical immersion, which is becoming more and more difficult with time.

It also provided a garden oasis by the Gorge waterway, in an area otherwise utilized for industrial activities and otherwise lacking in natural greenery needed to cool the area and remove toxins from the air.

The Point Ellice House Museum was dependent on financial aid from the Provincial government to keep it open, yet just as the Province has announced a several billion dollar budget "surplus from higher-than-normal fossil gas royalties", the museum is closing due to a lack of funds.

This seems positively parsimonious and stingy, if not grinch-like, given the conditions of surplus.  The NDP Provincial Government's current record when it comes to history and heritage has been under consistent criticism due to it's treatment of the Royal BC Museum.

Does Point Ellice House need to be the next casualty of neglect when it comes to history and heritage with this current government?  Or perhaps the Provincial government can learn from its recent fiasco with the RBCM and seek to maintain and manage its historical and tourist sites better and without issue.

Please contact the new Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport of British Columbia Lana Popham MLA and request that the Province preserve and keep the Point Ellice House Museum open to the public.
