Thank you OPP for saving Vimy Wolf!

Thank you OPP for saving Vimy Wolf!

The Issue

We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to some very caring folks who helped us recover this beautiful injured wolf on a frigid -30 degree evening recently! 🐺

At around 8 p.m. last Saturday, we received a call from an individual named Blake who had just struck a wolf on Highway 17 in Hagar with his truck. Kind-hearted, Blake followed the injured animal that had crawled off the highway and wedged itself under an old vehicle nearby. Two O.P.P. officers - Constables McMahon and Doodnath - arrived on the scene shortly afterwards, and helped Blake in reaching out to local facilities for assistance, as they did not want to dispatch the wolf. We responded over an hour later and, with their assistance, were able to manoeuvre the terrified young wolf out of its hiding spot and into a secure enclosure. The extraction would not have been possible without their help!

Thanks to their dedication and persistence in freezing temperatures, the wolf is now in good hands! Weighing 60 pounds, this striking canine sustained injuries to its hip area and was treated for shock upon arrival back at Turtle Pond. By the next morning, he was bright and alert. We then transported him to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary for a vet assessment, including x-rays. Our collective hope is that the injuries sustained will be repairable. This was also a milestone for us as our first wolf patient!

Blake, being a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, asked that the wolf be named Vimy in honour of the military police working dog Vimy who passed away in 2021. The name is, of course, also a nod to Vimy Ridge in WWI.

In today's fast-paced world, we are grateful for those who step up to help wildlife in distress. We are so grateful - THANK YOU!
