On January 26, 2015, SB 11 was filed in the Texas Senate, which would allow any properly licensed Texan to carry their handgun concealed onto a college campus. There is no "opt out" option and UT's new chancellor, Admiral William H. McRaven, has come out publicly opposed to this legislation.

Allowing guns on campus would create a dangerous learning environment and make many students feel vulnerable and unsafe. Additionally, millions of dollars worth of insurance will have to be purchased by the schools, raising student tuition across the state. Students, staff and faculty members, officers and police unions are all against guns on campus.
