Life in Louisiana was quite different than life in Alaska. It was a whole new climate to adjust to. I stated in my earlier post that we faced new challenges as a family. By the end of 2005 we had divorced.

They gained new siblings in early 2006, when their dad remarried and when I remarried in 2008. Of course, there is always growing pains with blended families. I am proud of how the kids handled it.

We lived in Louisiana during Katrina, but we were far enough away that it didn’t affect us too much. However, Rita, did affect us. I remember my sister tried to get us to go there before it hit, and of course, I said no, we will ride it out. We spent hours in a bathroom in the bath tub as the wind blew, it did get scary at times. I can’t remember how long the power was out, but I do remember finally leaving to go to my sisters house after a few days and not being able to find gas. I was so worried we were going to run out of gas on the side of the road because all the gas stations were out. We were finally able to find gas in a small little town.

During our time in Louisiana we went on several different types of day trips and adventures. We spent a lot of time down at Holly Beach, alligator lake, picking berries, fishing, exploring historical sites, the capitol, Myrtles Plantation, zoos, at the lake with friends, Mardi Gras, festivals, parades, etc.

We had great times in our backyard, swimming in the pool, trips to San Antonio to visit friends, the botanical gardens, playing with cousins and new siblings, outdoor fires, cooking s’mores, cookouts, game nights, Dan, Dan, the Cooking man, Dave, Dave the man who wouldn’t shave ( both still my dear friends).

I remember driving the back roads and we would see gators hanging out on the sides of the road. We tried alligator for the first time living there. ( I’m pretty sure I either tricked or bribed the kiddos into trying it.) When we first lived on post we built the kids a treehouse down in the woods. We spent a lot of time exploring that patch of woods. A tiger was loose on post, so that curtailed that for awhile. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s actually true.

Of course, there were hard times, that is life. Stormie had her first kiss after we moved back on Fort Polk, not long before our duty station changed. Yes, Ryan, I remember! In fact, I had hope for the longest time they would end up married with kids.

It was quite an adventure. We had a lot of good times in Louisiana, made some great life long friends.

Eventually our time in Louisiana came to an end, and we prepared for another duty station. Since the hubby was going to be deploying as soon as we arrived and the waitlist for housing was so long, the kids and I opted to relocate to Oregon until he came back. That is where I’ll stop at today.

I apologize for my writing being a little scattered. Thank you for continuing to share the petition. We are close to 5,000 signatures!
