Impeach and remove District Judge Jean Boyd for rich Texas teen's lenient sentence.
Impeach and remove District Judge Jean Boyd for rich Texas teen's lenient sentence.
The Issue
Judges must know that they too are held accountable for their actions and that when they allow the rich to escape fair sentencing, they will be removed from their position.
On December 10, 2013 State District Judge Jean Boyd sentenced a 16 year old male to 10 years probation starting at a California rehabilition center for the rich. After stealing beer and drinking underage, Ethan Couch began driving drunk and drove his truck into four people: Brian Jennings, a 43-year-old Burleson youth minister; Breanna Mitchell, age 24; Shelby Boyles, age 21, and her 52-year-old mother, Hollie Boyles. This young man claimed "affluenza" - because he was rich and had never been held accountable. Judge Jean Boyd continued this trend when she sentenced him to 10 years of probation for killing four people.
Why does a rich, white student get 10 years probation? What would the sentence have been for a kid from the streets who didn't have parents offering to pay 1/2 million dollars for a posh rehab?
We must send send a clear message that lenient sentences to the affluent is not tolerated in Texas or anywhere else in America and that judges who grant lenient sentences to the rich will be held accountable.
In Texas, judges may be impeached by the house of representatives and removed by two thirds of the senate. We call on the Texas House of Representatives to impeach District Court Judge Jean Boyd and the Texas Senate to remove her from office.
