The Issue

Beckey McConnell was convicted of a crime that she didn't commit. She was told what to say by the police when she was interviewed after being arrested and when she resisted and attempted to tell her side, they stopped the tape and told her what to say again. She tried to fire her court appointed attorney and was told by him that she couldn't do it. Nearly every time that the judge asked her a question and she began to reply, her attorney took her aside and told her what to say and then told the judge that she didn't understand the question. By the way, her attorney was the judge's cousin. At the end of the trial, she was sentenced to 30 to life.

Beckey wasn't exactly a pillar of the community, but neither was she a murderer. But the man that was living with her certainly was. In fact, he terrified her and threatened to kill her if she ever told what she knew. But when the police came to her door, she thought that she was saved and she told them what had happened. She was very wrong, because they arrested her and the rest you already know.

Beckey has been abused all her life. First by her mother who nearly killed her when she struck her in the head with a car jack leaving her with a broken skull and covered in blood, to the people that she loved who beat her to control her. Today, she has moved beyond her past. She has worked hard and has even earned her ordination. In fact, it is her strong faith that has helped her to survive what has happened to her as a human being.

She is asking the Governor for relief in the form of a conditional pardon. Because of her background, her irregular interrogation and trial, and because of what she has achieved behind bars, she is asking the Governor to revise her sentence to time served. All that she wants is to have a normal life without the chaos she endured before. Please help her to achieve it.
