Overturn SB 11 "Campus Carry"

In the early morning hours of August 1,1966, Charles Whitman, a student at UT Austin, brought a cache of guns to campus and proceeded to murder 14 people over an approximate 90-minute period. Thirty-two others lay wounded.
Now, nearly 50 years later, the Texas legislature and Governor Abbott have passed SB 11, a bill that requires the state’s public universities to allow handguns in dorms, classrooms and campus buildings. More shocking still is that 50 years to the day of the Whitman shooting, on August 1st 2016, this misguided bill will go into effect. Unless we stop it.
I'm proud to be a Longhorn but I am not proud of what our state government is doing to our universities. They’re taking our oases of education, some of the most important institutions in our country, and using them as laboratories to test the limits of gun rights. And putting hundreds of thousands of students at risk in the process.
Guns have no place on our campus, or any campus. These places should remain institutions of higher learning, free from the worries that guns and violence bring. Our college campuses, where we harbor and educate our future, are not the place to experiment with gun rights.
Let's rally together, and join the thousands of students, faculty and staff and everyday people that oppose SB 11, and ask the Texas State Senate to introduce legislation to repeal this law.
