A petition is being started today due to students that are being affected by the COVID-19 virus and their certification as future educators. We are starting this petition today to extend our due dates, or to be waived, for TExES Core and PPR exams for education majors graduating Fall 2020. During the Spring semester of 2020, a semester before one is able to begin Clinical Teaching, education majors are taking classes that prepare them for these exams. With the effect that COVID-19 has had on not only UTRGV students but all university students, we believe it is important for students to continue their education but also not be pressured with exam due dates the semester has set before their student teaching, with the pandemic that is happening. Most students were preparing to take exam(s) late March, early April, before the pandemic. Testing centers have shut down, and open until mid-April with few seats available due to “social distancing”. Aside from these issues education majors are facing, there is a mandatory 45-day waiting period to retest. There are mandatory workshops and representative exams that need to be taken before we are able to even apply for our exams. We believe that although these tests are vital to our major, we should be able to start our Clinical Teaching semester without exam scores being due before the semester has begun, especially with the pandemic we are going through.
