Coronavirus has spread far and wide this year. Parents, educators, and students are worried about staying healthy and the time they are losing due to school closures for the foreseeable future to help prevent the spread of this virus. When children return to school, they will need a safe, clean school to come back to; but more importantly, school districts should focus on what every child needs and not about a test that will show our students didn’t get a full year to grow because of this virus. Schools will be affected by the grade they receive from these tests. Let school districts focus on each child’s mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Let school districts focus on teaching everything that needs to be taught and not just on what will help students pass a test. Let school districts do their jobs of educating children by putting children first. As a principal of elementary students and a mother of two, I understand the need to assess how schools are doing. I crave progress in all I do. But not this year. This is not the year for testing. This is the year for doing what is right by students.
