Linda Meeks started this petition to Texas Department of Transportation

For those who work and live in the Chapel Hill community or commute through this area from outlying communities, know the very real threat of being involved in an accident at Hwy 64 E at Wolfe Lane-CR 289. Wolfe Lane Is a very heavily traveled cut across from Hwy 64 to other parts of Tyler and Smith County. In this petition, we are urging TXDOT to approve and fund the widening of Hwy 64 at the CR 289 Wolfe Lane intersection which would include the addition of turn lanes both directions on Hwy 64.We know there has already been a Highway Safety Improvement Project submitted by the Smith County engineer for TXDOT in early Oct 2020 proposing these changes. A decision by TXDOT is to be made in Jan 2021.
The citizens that have signed this petition are demanding that Hwy 64 at Wolfe Lane CR 289 be made safe for their families, children, friends & neighbors. We all have been witness to, been involved in or have known of someone involved in a serious or fatal accident at this intersection. Automobiles and tractor trailers traveling on a two lane Highway at speeds that reduce the drivers reaction time, along with the steep grade of Wolfe Lane as it intersects the highway are major contributing factors to these serious & sometimes fatal accidents. The latest Average daily traffic count for vehicles passing through this intersection on Hwy 64 is 9925. According to the TXDOT Crash Data Reports 2015-Oct 2020 there have been a total of 55 accidents at this intersection based on their criteria for a reportable accident. Those living near the intersection would argue the number is much greater.
Over the past few years, traffic has increased steadily with few roadway safety improvements being made. The last serious accident involving a fuel tanker could’ve ended in a much larger disaster had it exploded.  As East Texas continues to grow, injury accidents will only increase unless something is done to improve this intersection. Will you join us in this fight by signing today! Thank You.
