In the last few years I’ve lived on campus, numerous accounts of people destroying property in the hallways of dormitories have come up. There are no security cameras in the hallways of the dorms, so if the culprit cannot be found, the whole dorm has to pay for the damages. This is not fair, and could be prevented by adding hallway security cameras in the dorms and apartments on campus. For most dorms, it would probably be enough to have one camera on every other floor at the end of the hallway. This wouldn’t infringe on people’s privacy, because no one should need more privacy than they would outdoors while walking in community hallways. While it may be difficult to find funding during this global pandemic, I hope that this petition will at least bring the idea some attention so that the issue can be addressed in the future. I know that apartments do not normally have security cameras in their hallways, but since these are dorms on a college campus, I think they should be considered as such.
