Texas A&M should update their Song (War Hymn) for Texas A&M Graduation

The Issue

Texas A&M University is well known around the Nation as one of the top leading universities to attend. The term "Aggie" is a traditional word that gets instant reaction when spoken in the state of Texas.

People know about the great football games held in Kyle Stadium as the Texas A&M University students cheer and roar for their Aggie brothers to WIN! They hold each other swinging back and forth as they cheer loudly for Texas A&M.

Football games, Frat Parties, Unity Events and so much more....SUCH GREAT MOMENTS INDEED!

The two greatest moments in Texas A&M is the first day a student comes to Texas A&M University and the last day they attend as they finally GRADUATE from the GREAT Texas A&M University!

I decided to watch one of Texas A&M University Graduations and truly enjoyed it. The staging, wording, and planning of it showed the true traditions of Texas A&M and that true "AGGIE SPIRIT".

There was one thing that I caught that I didn't like about the graduation program. It was at the end when everyone sung the Texas A&M University Graduation Song known as the "War Hymn" symbolizing the end of attendance for Texas A&M students who finally graduated.

It signified more on the males graduating then the females. I noticed alot of females in that graduating class. Yet the War Hymn only states

Good-bye to texas university
So long to the orange and the white
Good luck to dear old Texas Aggies
They are the boys that show the real old fight
“The eyes of Texas are upon you . . .”

I do understand that Texas A&M University was founded in Brazos County in the year 1876, where women were not seen as equal back then.

Now in the 21st Century, females are just as equal as males in many ways. There are females who are CEOS, Lawyers, Politicians and Doctors. They have earned that by attending university and gaining a BS, BA and even a Masters and PHD in their field.

With it being 2024 and just as many females attending Texas A&M University as males, shouldn't the Ending Graduation Song "War Hymn" mention glory to the females also and not just the males?

Yes the men are going to state "But this is Tradition!" Tradition changes at times when necessary. When you sing that song honoring the Great Texas A&M University graduates aka AGGIES, shouldn't you make sure to honor the females just as much as the males?

I even noticed while the graduates were singing that some females felt uncomfortable singing the War Hymn as they noticed it only saluted the males in their class and not them. Is this a form of sexism that has just been unnoticed for years until now?

If you agree with this organization, then you should show it through your signature on this petition. If you feel that females are still not as important as males at Texas A&M  and should have such respect then simply ignore this petition and allow non-equality of respect to continue at every Texas A&M University Graduation.

The choice is yours.

Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!
Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!

First Verse
All hail to dear old Texas A&M
Rally around Maroon and White
Good luck to dear old Texas Aggies
They are the boys who show the real old fight
That good old Aggie spirit thrills us
And makes us yell and yell and yell
So let’s fight for dear old Texas A&M
We’re going to beat you all to
Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem
Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem
Rough Tough! Real Stuff! Texas A&M!

Second Verse
Good-bye to texas university
So long to the orange and the white
Good luck to dear old Texas Aggies
They are the boys that show the real old fight
“The eyes of Texas are upon you . . .”
That is the song they sing so well
So good-bye to texas university
We’re going to beat you all to
Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem

Rough Tough! Real Stuff! Texas A&M!
