Request that Tesla offer traditional cruise control in their cars
Why this petition matters
Later model Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles (Starting in mid 2021 model year cars) have transitioned to a system called 'Tesla Vision' which removes radar and relies completely on cameras for Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autopilot functions. There are some serious issues with this new system in the form of sudden, unexpected braking while cruise control and autopilot are engaged under a wide variety of conditions. These sudden reductions in speed often happen on straight well marked sections of road with no oncoming traffic and in sunny daylight conditions. They happen for apparently no reason when the cars sense something that is not there. These reports are widespread and have even garnered media attention. At times, these sudden decreases in speed - sometimes 25-40mph slower suddenly, cause an unsafe situation which is eventually going to cause traffic accidents and perhaps even injuries or worse to the occupants. What we would like is for Tesla to enable an option to defeat the TACC and give customers the option for a standard, non-aware cruise control function to these cars temporarily and until this set of malfunctions can be corrected properly. We are not asking for this feature to be removed completely, just the ability for Tesla drivers to disable this feature persistently if they choose. This could be done via a simple over the air update which Tesla is easily capable of doing for almost no cost and might avoid accidents or even save lives.
