THPD Merit Commission needs to fire Brad Newman
The Issue
We are calling on the THPD Merit Commission to terminate Sgt. Brad Newman for his dangerous behavior and hate speech.
On December 6, 2020, a Terre Haute Police Department Sergeant, Brad Newman, proudly called for genocide, publicly supported a call to murder our president and vice president, and a few days later, promoted a threat to unleash violence and civil war in response to public health measures to prevent the spread of COVID. He is a danger to our people and an embarrassment to our city.
Yet, after a 6-day suspension, the Terre Haute Police Department put Newman back on duty as a Sergeant and a supervisor with a gun and a badge. They gave him a disciplinary slap on the wrist for hurting the image of the department and had the audacity to say this was all a misunderstanding of words. See full letter of suspension here.
This is not the first time Newman has faced suspension, but rather the seventh that we know of. Other violations by Newman that warranted suspension include but are not limited to: kicking and hitting a handcuffed arrestee and bragging that he “kicked his ass”, recklessly tasing a fellow officer, losing evidence, falsifying reports, and lying repeatedly to his superiors. To see the disciplinary timeline dating back more than thirteen years, click here. View Newman’s publicly available disciplinary records here.
