The Issue

Graduating from the local high school in Brooks, AB, Canada, I never imagined the day would come when I would have to stand against a teacher from my alma mater. This issue strikes a personal chord for me because I genuinely care about the values being instilled in young adults within my community and our province.

A teacher at the school recently made highly inappropriate and offensive remarks by celebrating the vicious cold blooded murder of a public figure, Charlie Kirk. Stating that his Murder was “just the cost of doing business” followed by “Karma is a Bitch”(via his instagram account @brentmeyer87). This statement not only is utterly disgusting, but it is a celebration of a cold blooded murder. He is happy that someone died cause of their political affiliation. Brent Mayer is a sadistic merciless human being and does not deserve to keep his position as a teacher in our community, province or county.

Regardless of one’s personal beliefs or political leanings, there is no place for such behaviour in educational institutions. Educators are meant to act as role models and guides, aiding in the holistic development of our youth. Allowing such conduct undermines the principles of respect and integrity that educators are expected to uphold.

The comments in question go beyond mere opinion expression. They border on encouraging violence and hatred, poisonous elements we must protect our community from. This kind of rhetoric does not contribute to a safe and supportive learning environment, rather it tears apart the moral foundations schools should be built upon. These words and attitudes can have lasting impressions on young minds that trust and look up to their teachers.

Numerous studies show that students' academic performance and emotional wellbeing significantly improve in atmospheres where educators practice open-mindedness, kindness, and positivity. In contrast, toxic environments can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and decreased academic interest among students. Therefore, the need to address this issue is urgent.

I strongly believe the teacher’s actions do not reflect the values upheld by our educational system in Brooks, Alberta, or the province at large. The local school board and relevant authorities must take swift action to ensure educators exhibit professionalism and genuine concern for students’ wellbeing.

We must stand united in demanding proper action be taken by the school board to terminate this teacher's position, reaffirming our commitment to nurturing a safe and positive environment for every student. We owe it to current and future generations to advocate for a more respectful, constructive, and tolerant educational atmosphere.

Please support this initiative and take a stand for the safety and integrity of our educational settings by signing this petition. Together, we can foster an environment where lessons taught are rooted in respect, tolerance, and understanding as we prepare our young adults for their futures.

We are calling on Grasslands Public Schools, The Alberta Teachers Association and Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith to take the proper actions and ensure that our kids are not going to be taught by monsters that celebrate murder.
