Support Insure Tennessee during General Sessions

Support Insure Tennessee during General Sessions

The Issue

On February 4th, seven Senators voted against Insure Tennessee -- Governor Haslam's health care plan -- during a Special Session in the legislature. Because of their vote, the plan never made it out of their committee, and it never went to the floor for a full vote.

Insure Tennessee can still be brought to the floor in the regular session, but our senators and representatives need to hear from us, and need to know that Tennesseans support Insure Tennessee.

Insure Tennessee, a conservative and unique health care plan, would offer health insurance to 280,000 Tennesseans who have no options for health care. The plan would help military veterans, working families, and other Tennesseans while supporting our state’s rural hospitals and our health care system. The plan will do all of this without adding any new taxes or increasing the state budget.

People all over the state — from Nashville to the smallest towns — struggle in the health care gap. 56-year-old Kenneth Wilburn is one of them. Kenneth used to be a maintenance man at a youth center in Pikeville. But because of repeated shoulder injuries, Ken hasn’t been able to work. He and his wife Cathy do what they can with his $325 monthly pension payment and odd jobs to make ends meet, but without insurance, Ken can’t get the surgery and physical therapy he needs so that he can go back to the work he loves. Insure Tennessee would not only help Ken and hundreds of thousands of other Tennesseans get the care they need, it would have a significant and positive financial impact on the state.

Our lawmakers need to hear our voice, and need to hear that we want Insure Tennessee to come to a full vote on the floor. Seven Senators should not be able to make a decision that impacts 280,000 Tennesseans.
