Change the name of Dead Negro Hollow in Tennessee

Change the name of Dead Negro Hollow in Tennessee

The Issue

Dead Negro Hollow, according to legend, was named for the murder of an African American laborer. While the US Board of Geographic Names changed many offensive location names from their original (and yes, even more offensive) monikers, the substitution of "Negro" is hardly a satisfactory change.

The mountains of Eastern Tennessee are gorgeous, and shouldn't have their majesty marred by offensive names. A change to Piney Creek Hollow would both remove the ugly mark of a racist past as well as highlight the local scenery and give a nod to nearby Piney Creek.

This change has been proposed to the US Board of Geographic Names under Proposal ID 9704.
