Tell Your Congressional Representatives to Support a Nuclear Weapons-Free World
On April 5, President Obama gave a major speech in Prague addressing nuclear issues. By putting a "world without nuclear weapons" at the center of US nuclear policy, Obama has signaled a real shift in strategy that acknowledges the Cold War is long over and that nuclear weapons are a liability that put all of us in danger.
President Obama outlined a series of steps forward to achieve this vision. Many of these steps will involve working with the international community to reduce the threat posed by nuclear weapons:
Reducing the role of nuclear weapons in the US national security strategy Negotiating a new treaty with Russia for deep, verifiable reductions to both countries' arsenals US ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty to help ban nuclear testing globally Preventing new nuclear weapons states by negotiating a new treaty that verifiably ends the production of fissile materials Strengthening the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty An international effort to prevent nuclear terrorism by securing loose nuclear materialPresident Obama stated, "The voices for peace and progress must be raised together" in order to "leave this world more prosperous and more peaceful than we found it." Although President Obama is committed to these goals, Congress must cooperate in order to make his vision a reality.
The goal of a nuclear weapons-free world and steps toward it has bipartisan support from high-level US policymakers like former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, former Senator Sam Nunn, and former Defense Secretary William Perry.

President Obama's speech in Prague on nuclear policy signals an important shift in US nuclear weapons posture, reducing the role they play in our security strategy. By putting a "world without nuclear weapons" at the center of US nuclear policy, Mr. Obama has signaled a real shift in strategy that acknowledges the Cold War is long over and that nuclear weapons are a liability that puts all of us in danger.
I support the steps he outlined to address the nuclear weapons threat and achieve a nuclear weapons free world. The US can work with Russia to dramatically reduce our nuclear stockpiles, strengthen the Non-Proliferation Treaty, work with the international community to prevent nuclear terrorism, and secure loose nuclear material.
The goal of a nuclear weapons free world and steps toward it has bipartisan support from high-level US policymakers like former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, former Senator Sam Nunn, and former Defense Secretary William Perry.
I urge you to support President Obama's plan by speaking out publicly in favor of the steps he outlined and by supporting relevant bills and treaties when they come to Congress for a vote.
