Since 1976, the William Way LGBT Community Center has served as the heart of Philadelphia's LGBTQ+ community. It is a place where generations have found support, celebrated milestones, organized for equality, preserved our history, and built community. The Center's Board and leadership are currently pursuing a proposed redevelopment of its longtime home at 1315 Spruce Street through a partnership with a third-party developer that would demolish the historic building.

We recognize the importance of expanding services, improving accessibility, and creating affordable housing for LGBTQ+ seniors. However, the Board has yet to demonstrate that this cannot be done without reusing the existing building. They should publicly show that preservation and adaptive reuse alternatives have been thoroughly evaluated, that the proposed partnership has the financial resources and commitment to carry out a project of this scale, and that demolition is truly necessary.

Many members of the LGBTQ+ community, neighborhood residents, preservation advocates, and longtime supporters feel they have been presented with a single predetermined outcome rather than invited into an open conversation about the Center's future. This concern was raised publicly in a June 2026 op-ed in the Philadelphia Gay News.

For a place built on community, care, organizing, and shared history, that process matters. The future of William Way should be shaped with the community, not simply announced to it.

We call on the William Way LGBT Community Center Board of Directors to:

• Pause any irreversible actions toward demolition until meaningful public engagement has occurred.
• Publicly evaluate adaptive reuse alternatives, including options that would expand programs and services while retaining the historic building.
• Hold public community meetings before final decisions are made, giving stakeholders genuine opportunities to ask questions, offer ideas, and influence the project's direction.
• Commit to preserving and interpreting the history and legacy of the William Way LGBT Community Center, regardless of the project's outcome.

This petition is not opposed to progress, or affordable housing, or investing in the future of the William Way LGBT Community Center. It is a call for transparency, responsible stewardship, and respect for one of Philadelphia's most important LGBTQ+ institutions.
