Recent comments from President Donald Trump about potentially “taking” Cuba have sparked debate about the future of U.S. policy toward the island.

Many Americans support a strong stance against authoritarian governments. At the same time, history has shown that military intervention can carry serious risks — for American lives, global stability, and the people living in those countries.

There is a better path forward. The United States can use its influence to push for meaningful reforms in Cuba — including greater political freedoms and economic opportunity — without resorting to military action.

We call on President Donald Trump and his administration to pursue a strategy that combines strength with restraint: apply diplomatic and economic pressure where needed, but reject any military takeover of Cuba.
