In the aftermath of Arizona passing the country's most severe immigration law, the Republican Party of Texas has decided to follow in the southwestern state's footsteps by including plans for similar legislation into the party's platform.  

The new immigration provision seeks to make it a Class A misdemeanor criminal offense for any illegal immigrant who is caught on Texas soil. Additionally, it would require police to check residency status upon arrest for other crimes and oppose "amnesty in any form leading to citizenship for illegal immigrants." 

We cannot let Texas follow in Arizona's misguided footsteps in immigration legislation. While it's clear that immigration reform is a real necessity, the answer does not lie in assaulting the rights, freedom and dignity of people just because they are not U.S. citizens. Please sign this petition demanding that the Republican Party of Texas retract its current provision for a new immigration law. Tell them that the party must rethink its approach in dealing with illegal immigration, and work to create a new immigration provision that will better benefit both immigrants and U.S. citizens.
