Tell the State of Delaware to Construct Wildlife Fences and Crossings for Roads

The Issue

How familiar is the image of a dead deer, raccoon, or fox by the side of the road?

The current amount of roadkill is horrifying.

My name is Baeden and I am a new driver, having recently completed the time for my learner’s permit. I have always loved animals and I, like most others, find it terrible that animals like deer, raccoons, foxes, groundhogs, squirrels, birds, turtles, frogs, and snakes are often accidentally killed by cars.

  • I urge you to notice that this is not a part of nature: these animals are not killed for food, though some animals like vultures may benefit, if they can even reach the animal when cars continue flying by, and this is too cruel a method to consider it “population control”, not to mention the considerable damage hitting deer and other animals causes cars, and the danger it puts the driver in, if the deer were to go through the windshield, or cause the driver to swerve into oncoming traffic.

In other states, especially those with large endangered mammals, whose clearly visible carcasses are cause for alarm, they have started to construct wildlife crossings, that do not interrupt traffic, which allow animals to safely travel across the roads and highways. These are often small bridges with vegetation that allow the animals natural environment to continue across the road, enticing them to cross through that section. These would work best along with reasonably sized fences that would prevent or dissuade animals from crossing at other sections of the road.

Please, for these innocent animals’ sake, the protection of drivers, and the sake of preserving our wildlife, sign this petition to persuade the State of Delaware to implement these wildlife crossings and fences!

If this does not happen, countless more animals will die needlessly and accidentally, but if these wildlife crossings are built, it could save the majority of those lives, the lives of drivers who would have hit these animals, plus the money the drivers would have to pay if their cars are damaged.
