Tell the Senate to Protect America's Wolves by Saying "NO" to H.R. 845
The Issue
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 845 “Pet and Livestock Protection Act.” This bill would strip gray wolves of their federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections and hand control over to states, which historically has proved to be disastrous.
When wolves were delisted in 2020, the consequences were immediate and devastating. In Wisconsin alone, 218 wolves were killed in less than 72 hours, more than double the state’s quota. It was chaos. Only swift legal action restored protections and stopped further slaughter.
This time is different and more dangerous.
H.R. 845 includes language that would block judicial review, meaning once wolves are delisted, there may be no legal path to protect them again. No checks. No balance. No second chance.
This bill ignores science, economics, and the will of the American people:
- 78% of Americans support federal wolf protections
- Over 400,000 people spoke out against wolf delisting in just one month
- Wolves generate over $82 million annually in the Yellowstone region alone, supporting local economies and thousands of jobs
- As a keystone species, wolves keep ecosystems healthy, balanced, and resilient
Wolves are not pests. They are not expendable. They are essential to our ecosystems, our economy, and hold cultural significance.
While concerns about livestock losses are understandable, available data show that wolves account for less than 1% of all livestock deaths annually. In comparison, other sources of loss are more significant; for example, a USDA report found that in 2015, domestic dogs were responsible for about 11.3% of predator-related cattle deaths in the United States.
The Senate must reject H.R. 845.
We are asking our Senators to listen to science, honor public opinion, and stand up for one of America’s most iconic and misunderstood species. Please use your voice. Wolves cannot speak for themselves but we can.
Say NO to H.R. 845. Keep wolves protected. 🐺
